Fatih Mosque is an Ottoman imperial mosque complex on Istanbul’s historic peninsula in the Fatih district. The original foundation was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II after the conquest of Constantinople, with construction beginning in the mid-15th century; the current building is largely the result of an 18th-century reconstruction after a major earthquake.
The mosque complex historically included a külliye of religious and charitable buildings such as a medrese and imaret; the site also contains the mausoleum of Mehmed II. The main prayer hall and associated buildings are a prominent element of the district’s urban fabric and attract both worshippers and visitors.
