Fat Margaret (Estonian: Paks Margareeta) is a large medieval cannon tower at the harbour entrance of Tallinn’s Old Town, built in the early 16th century to defend the port. It is one of the most prominent surviving elements of the city’s city-wall ensemble.

The tower is wide and robust by design, originally constructed to hold heavy artillery and to protect the seaward gate. Today the interior houses exhibition space and maritime displays as part of the city’s museum offerings.

Constructed during the high period of Tallinn’s fortification-building, the tower formed the defensive gate complex that controlled access from the harbour into the medieval town. Over centuries it has been preserved and repurposed for cultural uses.

Fat Margaret stands at the water side of Tallinn’s historic city centre, adjacent to the harbour and within easy walking distance of the Old Town squares and quays.

How to Get to Fat Margaret #

Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta) stands at the waterfront edge of Tallinn’s Old Town beside the harbor. From Tallinn city centre it’s an easy walk - roughly 5-10 minutes - from Viru Square/Viru Gate or the Old Town car-free area.

If using public transport, central tram and bus stops around Viru Square and the harbour are the closest; from Tallinn’s passenger port/ cruise terminals the tower is immediately adjacent, within a few minutes on foot.

Tips for Visiting Fat Margaret #

Plan to visit Fat Margaret early in the morning or late afternoon, especially on cruise ship days, since large day‑cruise groups pour into Tallinn's Old Town around mid‑day and make the immediate area busy.
Allow time to visit the Estonian Maritime Museum inside the tower - exhibitions about shipbuilding and maritime history are housed within, and many visitors focus only on the exterior tower.
Combine the tower visit with a short walk along the Great Coastal Gate and the nearby ramparts for different viewpoints of the harbor and Old Town rather than lingering solely at street level.
