How to Get to Faleula#
Faleula lies just outside central Apia on Upolu island; international arrivals use Faleolo International Airport (APW) with onward road travel into Apia and surrounding villages. There are no trains - stick to buses, taxis, or rental cars for local movement.
Faleolo International Airport (APW): Samoa’s main international airport, Faleolo, is on the west side of Upolu island. A taxi from Faleolo to Apia/Faleula takes about 40-50 minutes depending on traffic and costs roughly 60-80 WST; metered taxis and airport shuttle vans are available. Public buses between the airport and Apia are a much cheaper option (see Bus below) but are slower and less frequent outside peak times.
Train: There are no rail services on Samoa.
Bus: Public buses run along Upolu’s main coastal road connecting Apia with eastern and western villages. Fares are low (usually 1-5 WST for short trips, slightly more for longer intertown journeys); a bus from Apia to Faleula is typically 10-20 minutes depending on stops. Buses don’t always have fixed timetables-ask locals or the driver for the best route.
How to Get Around Faleula#
Samoa’s transport is road‑based: public buses and taxis cover the main routes on Upolu, while ferries or domestic flights connect to other islands. For most visitors a mix of public buses and taxis (or a rental car for more remote exploration) works best.
- Taxi (60-80 WST) - Taxis are the fastest and most convenient way to get between Faleolo and Apia/Faleula - ideal with luggage or on a tight schedule. Expect a 40-50 minute trip from Faleolo to Apia; agree the fare (typical airport fares are around 60-80 WST).
- Public bus (1-5 WST) - Public buses (shared) run along the main road on Upolu and are the cheapest way to travel between Apia and nearby villages. They are frequent in daylight hours, inexpensive (1-5 WST for most trips) and good for short distances, but they can be slow because of frequent stops.
- Rental car (Varies) - Hiring a car gives flexibility to explore Upolu at your own pace and reach beaches and villages beyond Apia. Drive on the left; roads are generally in good condition around Apia but can be narrow in villages. Bring your driver’s licence and check fuel availability.
- Inter-island ferry (Varies) - If you plan to visit Savai’i or other islands, regular ferries leave from Apia’s wharf; crossings to Savai’i take about 1-1.5 hours. Ferries are the main way to transfer vehicles and passengers between islands and are cheaper than flights.
- Bicycle (Varies / rental costs) - For short local trips around Apia and nearby villages, cycling is a practical option. Traffic can be busy on the main road, so stick to quieter side streets where possible and avoid night riding.
- Walking - Apia and adjacent villages like Faleula are compact enough for many short errands on foot. Walking is often the quickest way to move within the village or town centre.
