Mosque Historic Mogadishu mosque serving the Banaadir community
Historic mosque in Mogadishu’s Banaadir region significant for local Islamic worship and traditional Somali architectural features; visitors observe congregational practices and community life.
The Fakr-ad-Din (Fakhr al-Din) Mosque is a 13th-century mosque in the Hamar Weyne district of Mogadishu, Banaadir. It is dated to 1269 CE and is among the oldest surviving Islamic buildings in the city.
The mosque is notable for its coral-stone construction and traditional Somali-Islamic architectural features visible from the street. It remains an active neighborhood mosque rather than a large tourist site, so most observation is external or brief visits during non-prayer times.
The mosque was commissioned in the 13th century by a local ruler associated with the historical ruling elite of medieval Mogadishu and has served continuously as a place of Muslim worship. Its fabric and surroundings have undergone repairs and restorations at various times while retaining its medieval foundation date.
Sited in the old port quarter of Mogadishu (Hamar Weyne) on Somalia’s Indian Ocean coast, the mosque sits within the dense urban fabric of the city and is reachable from central Mogadishu by road.
- Visiting etiquette: The mosque is an active place of worship; non-Muslim visitors should be respectful and check local rules before entering.
- Age and significance: Built in the 13th century (dated to 1269 CE), it is one of Mogadishu's oldest surviving mosques.
