Fair Park

Fair Park is a 277-acre public recreation and exposition complex in southeast Dallas, Texas, and is the long-established home of the State Fair of Texas.

The site contains dozens of exhibition halls, museums and performance venues across an Art Deco campus. Highlights on the grounds include the Hall of State, large outdoor event spaces and the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium; visitors also come for museum exhibits, planted gardens and seasonal festivals.

The park was developed as Dallas’s fairgrounds in the late 19th century and underwent major expansion and Art Deco redevelopment for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. Many of the centennial-era buildings remain in civic and cultural use today and the complex is recognised for its historical architecture.

Fair Park sits about 2 miles east-southeast of downtown Dallas in an urban setting bounded by the Trinity River plain to the west and city neighborhoods on the other sides.

• State Fair timing: Held annually in late September and October, the State Fair of Texas is the park’s largest event and brings major crowds and temporary attractions to the grounds.
• Architectural highlights: Many of the park’s buildings date to the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition and are notable examples of Art Deco civic architecture, with good photo views from the Esplanade and the Hall of State steps.

• Hall of State: Built for display and administrative purposes during the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, this Art Deco complex includes exhibition halls, landscaped plazas and permanent cultural institutions.
• Cotton Bowl Stadium: A large, historic stadium on the Fair Park grounds used for college football games, concerts and major outdoor events, located on the park’s northern edge.
• African American Museum of Dallas: A museum on the park grounds dedicated to African American history and culture in Dallas, offering rotating exhibits and educational programs.
• Texas Discovery Gardens: A planted display garden and conservation area within the park that focuses on native plants, butterflies and seasonal displays.
• Fair Park Coliseum: An indoor arena on the Fair Park grounds used for concerts, sporting events and exhibitions, located close to the Cotton Bowl.

Fair Park is immediately east of downtown Dallas and is served by DART light rail: take the Green Line to the Fair Park station, then walk about 5-10 minutes to the park’s main gates. Several DART bus routes also serve nearby stops.

By car it’s roughly a 10-15 minute drive (about 1-3 miles depending on starting point) from central Dallas; I-30/MLK Jr. Boulevard and surface streets provide direct access and there is parking on site.

• Visit Fair Park outside State Fair season (late September-October) to see the full art‑deco architecture and public art with far fewer people; during the State Fair expect heavy crowds and long lines.
• Use public transit - DART's Fair Park station on the Green Line drops you close to main attractions and spares you the event‑day parking search.
• Walk the Grand Court and Esplanade to appreciate exterior murals, sculptures and building details that many visitors miss when they focus only on fairground attractions.
