Everest Base Camp (South, Nepal) is the principal southern base camp for expeditions on Mount Everest, located in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal. It sits at about 5,364 meters above sea level and is inside Sagarmatha National Park.

The site is a major objective for high-altitude trekkers and the logistical hub for climbers attempting Everest from the Nepal side. Trekkers reach the area after a flight to Lukla followed by several days of trekking through settlements such as Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, while climbers use the camp to organize rotations onto higher camps.

Many visitors also go to nearby viewpoints such as Kala Patthar, which offers one of the closest panoramic views of Everest’s summit and the south face. The camp sits on the Khumbu Glacier close to features used by expeditions, including the Khumbu Icefall.

The location has been used as a staging and camping area by mountaineering expeditions since the early 20th century, including British reconnaissance teams in the 1920s and later summit attempts in the mid 20th century. Over time it also became a popular high-altitude trekking destination for non-climbing visitors.

The camp is in Solukhumbu District, on the Khumbu Glacier below the south face of Mount Everest in northeastern Nepal. The area is remote from road networks; the nearest gateways are Lukla (by air) and the regional hub of Kathmandu several hundred kilometers to the west by road and air.

  • Altitude: Sits at about 5,364 meters above sea level and lies within Sagarmatha National Park, a protected area in the Khumbu region.
  • Access: Serves as the primary southern staging area for climbers attempting Mount Everest and as a trekkers' destination reached by multi-day trek from Lukla or by helicopter.
  • Best time: Best visited in the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon windows, when weather is most stable for trekking and climbing (commonly April-May and September-November).

What to See #

  • Gorak Shep: A small settlement used by trekkers as the final overnight stop before the camp, located a short distance east of base camp at about 5,164 meters elevation.
  • Kala Patthar: A rocky prominence south of Everest that rises to roughly 5,545 meters and is the most popular nearby viewpoint for close panoramas of the summit and south face.
  • Khumbu Icefall: The glacier feature at the head of the Khumbu Glacier that climbers cross on the route from base camp toward higher camps and the southeast ridge.

How to Get to Everest Base Camp (South, Nepal) #

The usual approach begins in Kathmandu (Tribhuvan International Airport). From Kathmandu most trekkers fly to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport, code LUA), a 30-40 minute flight with notoriously weather-sensitive landings. From Lukla the standard trek runs through Phakding, Namche Bazaar (acclimatization), Tengboche, Dingboche and Gorak Shep before the short final hike to Base Camp.

Typical logistics: 8-12 days of trekking from Lukla to EBC (depending on acclimatization days), with return in another 3-4 days; many itineraries are 12-16 days round-trip from Kathmandu. All foreign trekkers must register for Sagarmatha National Park and obtain a TIMS card; many opt to book through licensed trekking agencies that handle permits and Lukla flights.

Tips for Visiting Everest Base Camp (South, Nepal) #

  • Fly to Lukla early in the morning; afternoon flights cancel more often. Expect a 30-50 minute flight from Kathmandu (JFK-style runway, weather-dependent).
  • Acclimatize in Namche Bazaar - add an extra acclimatization day rather than forcing altitude gain; most rescues happen to those who skip this. Consider buying evacuation insurance that covers helicopter rescue (helicopter evacuations cost several thousand dollars).
  • Carry hard copies of your Sagarmatha National Park permit and TIMS card; mobile service is spotty and local checkpoints still like paper.
  • Gorak Shep, the final settlement before Base Camp, has basic tea houses but no running water in winter - bring purification tablets and layers; nights are bitterly cold even in the trekking season.

Best Time to Visit Everest Base Camp (South, Nepal) #

Best in pre-monsoon (March-May) or post-monsoon (September-November) for clearer skies and safer trekking conditions.

Pre-monsoon (spring)
March-May · -10°C to 5°C at EBC daytime
Clear skies and the busiest season for summit teams; rhododendrons bloom lower down, but afternoon clouds can form near the summit.
Post-monsoon (autumn)
September-November · -12°C to 6°C at EBC daytime
Often the most stable weather window for trekking - cooler nights but excellent visibility; fewer crowds than spring on some sections.
Monsoon and winter (avoid for clear views)
June-August, December-February · -20°C to 0°C at EBC daytime
Monsoon brings clouds and rain at lower elevations; winter is brutally cold and many tea houses close.
