Euphrates Lake
Reservoir Reservoir on the Euphrates River supplying irrigation
Euphrates Lake, the reservoir behind Syria’s Tabqa (Al-Tabqah) dam, extends across the Euphrates; its wetlands and shoreline are noted for waterbirds and archaeological sites along the flooded river terraces.
Lake Assad is the large artificial reservoir on the Euphrates in northern Syria created by the construction of the Tabqa (Euphrates) Dam in the early 1970s. It is Syria’s largest reservoir and reshaped the local landscape along the Euphrates valley.
The reservoir was created as part of the Tabqa Dam project completed in the early 1970s to generate hydroelectric power and provide irrigation. Filling the basin inundated former river valleys and required archaeological survey and relocation efforts for sites in the floodplain.
The lake lies on the middle Euphrates in northern Syria, with the Tabqa/al-Thawrah settlement and dam at its southern end; it occupies a broad stretch of the Euphrates valley north of Raqqa.
- Archaeology: Archaeological salvage campaigns were carried out before the reservoir filled, and several sites were documented or relocated.
- Viewing points: Best viewpoints are along the dam at al-Thawrah and from secondary roads on the western shore, where wide vistas across the reservoir are visible.
What to See #
- Tabqa Dam / al-Thawrah: Reservoir formed by the Tabqa (Euphrates) Dam with the dam and its hydroelectric plant at the southern end of the lake; the dam was completed in the early 1970s.
- Shoreline wetlands and fisheries: Shoreline wetlands and reedbeds that support fisheries and seasonal waterbird concentrations along the Euphrates corridor.
