Sabkhat al-Jabbul

Sabkhat al-Jabbul is a large saline lake and seasonal salt flat in Aleppo Governorate in northern Syria; it is the country’s largest natural lake. The site occupies a shallow endorheic depression and alternates between open water and exposed salt flats depending on seasonal rainfall.

The landscape around the lake is characterised by broad salt pans and shallow lagoons that attract waterbirds and other wildlife during wetter months. People visiting the area note the extensive salt crusts and the flat, open horizon rather than formal tourist facilities.

The basin is a natural feature formed by surface runoff collecting in a closed depression; its shoreline and extent have shifted with climatic and land-use changes over centuries. Local communities have long used the area for grazing and salt-related activities.

The lake lies in a semi-arid plain roughly 45 km southeast of Aleppo, surrounded by low agricultural land and steppe. The site sits at low elevation relative to the surrounding uplands and is accessible from regional roads.

• Best time to view: Salt flats and shallow saline waters are most visible in the dry season when the lake contracts.

• Plan for dawn or dusk visits - the low light coincides with the greatest bird activity and the sabkha's reflective surfaces show strongest colors at those times.
• Approach from Aleppo and coordinate with local conservation authorities or birding groups before you go; access routes and conditions can change and local contacts will know which shoreline areas are currently reachable.
• Visit in the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) when water levels and migrating birds are more likely to be present and temperatures are milder than in midsummer.
