Euesperides: Area Q

Area Q is an archaeological sector within the ancient city of Euesperides, located on the coastal plain beside modern Benghazi in eastern Libya. The broader site represents a Greek foundation that continued in use through Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Excavations in Area Q have exposed urban remains including building foundations, parts of street layouts and mosaic fragments that illustrate the continuity of occupation from the Greek into the Roman era. The exposed features document domestic and civic use within the city’s plan.

Euesperides was founded by Greek settlers in the Archaic period and later experienced Hellenistic and Roman influence, with successive phases of construction and redevelopment through antiquity. The site’s material culture reflects those changing political and cultural links.

Area Q lies on the outskirts of present-day Benghazi, fronting the Gulf of Sidra on the Cyrenaican coast, within the broader ancient urban zone associated with classical Euesperides.
