Esztergom Basilica
Church Hungary's largest basilica and archbishop's seat
Hungary’s large basilica overlooking the Danube Bend, containing a national ecclesiastical museum and a climbable dome; tourists visit for religious art, panoramic river views and guided tours of the treasury.
Esztergom Basilica is the principal Roman Catholic church in Hungary and the seat of the country’s archdiocese, constructed in a grand neoclassical style. It is widely noted as the largest church in Hungary and a major religious and architectural landmark.
Visitors typically view the expansive main nave, altar and monumental interior, and many go to the dome area or exterior terraces for panoramic views over the Danube and the Esztergom landscape. The basilica also houses a treasury and crypt with ecclesiastical objects and historical liturgical items.
The current basilica was built in the 19th century on the site of earlier medieval cathedrals; construction and restoration work took place across the 1800s as the modern structure replaced earlier buildings. It has since been maintained as the primatial church of Hungary.
The basilica stands in the town of Esztergom on the right bank of the Danube in northern Hungary, close to the Slovak border and roughly 45-50 kilometres north of Budapest by road. Its elevated position overlooks the river and surrounding countryside.
