How to Get to Esztergom
Esztergom is easiest reached from Budapest: Budapest Airport (BUD) plus a direct regional train or bus to Esztergom provides the most straightforward public‑transport route. Trains and buses run regularly, making day trips from Budapest common.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD): The main way to reach Esztergom is via Budapest. From BUD take the 100E airport bus to central Budapest (Deák Ferenc tér; fare ~900 HUF / ~€2.5), then a MÁV train from Budapest Nyugati or Budapest-Déli to Esztergom (regional trains run; see MÁV timetable). Total travel time ~1.5-2 hours depending on connections; expect combined public-transport cost ~2,000-3,500 HUF (~€5-€10).
Vienna International Airport (VIE): Some travellers arrive via Vienna and then travel by rail and bus to Esztergom (longer journey). From Vienna the rail/bus combination typically takes 3-4+ hours; consider this only if combining Vienna with Budapest travel.
Train: Esztergom is served by MÁV regional trains from Budapest (often from Budapest Nyugati). Trains typically take ~1-1.5 hours and single fares are in the low‑thousands of HUF (roughly €2.5-€6 depending on ticket type). Check MÁV for up‑to‑date timetables and fares.
Bus: Volánbusz and regional buses also connect Budapest and Esztergom; journey times are similar to the train (~1-1.5 hours) and fares are comparable. Buses can be a good option if train times don’t match your arrival.
