Estrela Basilica

The Estrela Basilica (Basílica da Estrela) is a late 18th-century church in the Estrela district of Lisbon, commissioned by Queen Maria I. It was built as a votive project and forms a notable element of the city’s historic fabric.

Visitors come to view the church’s Baroque and Neoclassical interior and exterior, including a large central dome flanked by twin towers that create a characteristic profile. The church houses the tomb of Queen Maria I and is approached via a formal square and gardens that are frequently used by locals and visitors for short walks and photography.

Construction was commissioned by Queen Maria I in fulfillment of a vow and was carried out in the late 18th century; the basilica subsequently became a parish church and a royal foundation. Its architectural style reflects the transition from Baroque to Neoclassical tastes of the period.

The basilica sits on Praça da Estrela in western Lisbon, between the Estrela and Campo de Ourique neighborhoods, within easy distance of central Lisbon by tram and bus.
