Northern Coast & Tallinn
By March the first true thaws arrive along the Gulf of Finland, and patches of slush appear on Tallinn’s sidewalks; daytime highs often creep above freezing. Migratory birds begin to return to places like Põhja-Kõrvemaa and the foam on the sea edge can make the coast look wintry one day and muddy the next. If you’re timing a city break, early spring brings cheaper accommodation but occasional last snows and wet boots.
West Coast & Islands (Pärnu, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa)
Early spring sees the islands emerge slowly: March brings thawing days and a lot of wind that keeps headlands raw, while Saaremaa’s juniper pastures begin to show green. Ferry crossings to the islands become more regular, but expect muddy roads inland and occasional potholes as frost thaws. Birdwatchers start to see returning migrants along the western shores; binoculars and waterproof boots are a good idea.
Central Lowlands & Forests (Soomaa, Põlvamaa, Viljandi)
As the thaw begins in March, Soomaa’s ‘fifth season’ is not yet underway but boggy tracks start to get muddy and slushy; expect variable conditions underfoot. Forest trails reveal early shoots, and migrating birds begin to pass through Tõrva and surrounding areas. Travellers should pack waterproof footwear and prepare for impromptu puddled hiking - a flexible schedule works best this month.
Southeast Highlands (Otepää, Haanja, Võru)
With March sunshine the highlands begin to feel livelier: slopes can be slushy by day but groomers usually keep trails usable, and the smell of thawing pine is noticeable. Skiing can still be excellent in early March, especially on north-facing slopes, and traditional village life continues with quieter cafés and local markets. Bring layers - mornings are often frozen while afternoons may be mild enough for outdoor coffees.
Northeast & Lake Peipus (Narva, Jõhvi, Lake Peipus shoreline)
As March advances the first melt often begins along the lake edges, producing dramatic ice movement and occasional fog over the Peipus shoreline. Daytime temperatures may rise above freezing, but nights can still bite; bring layers for variable conditions. Bird migration ramps up near reedbeds and estuaries, attracting birdwatchers to the Narva delta and Peipus islets.
