Esplanadi

Esplanadi is a tree-lined boulevard and central park area in downtown Helsinki, Uusimaa, known as a primary city promenade since the early 19th century. The promenade is a compact urban green space of roughly 400 metres in length that links busy shopping streets and cultural venues.

Laid out in the early 19th century as part of Helsinki’s urban development, the esplanade area developed into a formal promenade and public park during the 19th century and has retained its role as a recreational and social space. Buildings and cafés along the boulevards were added over time, shaping the current commercial and leisure character.

Located in central Helsinki, Esplanadi occupies a central city block in Uusimaa within easy walking distance of Market Square and other central landmarks. It is in the city centre and is commonly reached on foot from Helsinki Central Station.

• Visiting tips: Best experienced in summer when outdoor concerts, street performers and table service at the park cafés are most active; the park is locally nicknamed "Espa."
• Notable features: Contains a well-known statue and several small monuments within the central green, and houses the historic Kappeli pavilion on the park's east side.

What to See #

• Esplanadi Park: A narrow central green strip lined by trees and benches, running between the parallel streets Eteläesplanadi and Pohjoisesplanadi in central Helsinki; hosts kiosks, sculptural monuments and the park pavilion restaurant Kappeli.
• Eteläesplanadi and Pohjoisesplanadi: The southern and northern boulevards flanking the park, each edged with shops, cafés and neoclassical buildings that form the promenade's commercial frontage.
