The ancient city of Erythrae on the Aegean coast of İzmir Province preserves a hillside theatre, harbour ruins and tombstones; visitors come for archaeological remains, coastal views and quiet walks along the shore.
Erythrae (Erythrai) is an ancient Ionian city on the Aegean coast of western Anatolia, located near the modern village of Ildırı in İzmir Province. It was an active Greek settlement in the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods and retains visible ruins of its public buildings.
Surviving remains include an acropolis with defensive walls and an open-air theatre positioned to overlook the sea. The city occupied a strategic coastal location and its ruins form a compact archaeological area close to the shoreline.
Geographically the site sits on the Çeşme peninsula on Turkey’s Aegean coast, within easy reach of the coastal towns and the city of İzmir.

The ancient site of Erythrae is at the modern village of Ildırı on the Çeşme peninsula (İzmir Province). From İzmir take an intercity bus to Çeşme, then a local dolmuş (minibus) or taxi toward Ildırı/Ildir village; the archaeological remains and waterfront are a short walk from the village centre/harbour.

- Approach the site from the nearby coastal village of Ildırı (ancient Erythrae) and go early in the day to avoid the summer heat and to get the clearest views across to Chios.
