Erg Chigaga

Erg Chigaga is a large dune field in the Moroccan Sahara located in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, known for extensive sand seas and high dunes. It is one of the deeper and more remote ergs in southern Morocco, often visited for desert camping and dune trekking.

The broad dune landscapes and opportunities for long walks, sandboarding and overnight camps under the desert sky. The area attracts visitors seeking a quieter, less commercial desert experience compared with more accessible dunes elsewhere in Morocco.

The erg is a natural Saharan formation shaped by wind-driven sand accumulation over centuries and has long been traversed and used seasonally by nomadic and local populations. Modern visits are typically arranged from nearby desert towns and villages as part of guided excursions.

Geographically Erg Chigaga lies deep in southern Morocco’s desert region, inland from the Draa Valley and south of the Atlas foothills. The site is reached by tracks from small desert settlements on the edge of the erg.
