Why Visit Epirus (region) #

Hike the Vikos Gorge in Vikos-Aoös National Park to see one of the world’s deepest river gorges by depth-to-width ratio. The trails from Monodendri to Oxia give dramatic views and you can combine a day’s walk with a cold dip in the Voidomatis River - clear, fast and refreshingly cold even in summer.

Drive the stone-arch bridges between the 46 Zagorochoria villages and linger in Papingo and Mikro Papigo for alpine character without the crowds of the islands. Stone mansions, local tavernas serving pies and beans, and remote access to Mount Tymfi make this patchwork of villages uniquely quiet and photogenic.

Metsovo is the highland gateway for Epirus’ best cheeses and smoked Metsovone - taste them with local red wine at a kafeneio. The town’s alpine architecture and mountain-air markets make for a cozy stop between mountain hikes and village wandering.

Take the short boat ride to Nissi Island on Lake Pamvotis to see Ali Pasha’s Ottoman-era house and tiny monastic chapels. Ioannina’s waterfront cafés are perfect for people-watching; use the city as a base for castle strolls and nearby rafting on the Aoos.

Head east to the Tzoumerka (Athamanika) mountains for steep trails, stone-built villages like Kalarites, and fewer tourists than the Zagori. Routes here are raw and rewarding, with high passes, hidden chapels and sturdy guesthouses that serve hearty local stews.

Getting to & Around Epirus (region) #

Most travelers reach Epirus by air into Ioannina Airport (IOA) or by flying into Aktion/Preveza (PVK) for the southern coast; both airports have regional and seasonal services. Igoumenitsa is the maritime gateway with ferries to Italy and Corfu, while long-distance coaches connect Ioannina with Athens (about 5-6 hours) and Thessaloniki. The Egnatia Odos (A2/E90) motorway links Igoumenitsa eastwards to Thessaloniki and beyond.

Epirus is mountainous and sparsely populated compared with much of Greece, so road travel dominates; many villages are reachable only by car or coach. Coastal towns and the ferry port at Igoumenitsa give better connections, while inland gorges and high passes can be slow in winter or closed in heavy snow.

  • Rental Car - A rental car is the most flexible way to explore Epirus’ mountains, remote villages and coastal spots; expect narrow, winding mountain roads around Zagori and the Pindus. Many car-rental desks operate from Ioannina Airport (IOA) and at the port towns.
  • Buses - Intercity KTEL coaches link Ioannina, Igoumenitsa, Preveza and smaller towns to Athens and Thessaloniki; buses are the main public option for places without rail. Bus services are frequent on coastal and main inland routes but less so into mountain villages.
  • Ferries - Igoumenitsa is the region’s principal ferry hub with frequent international sailings to Italy and domestic connections to Corfu and Paxos; ferries are also useful for reaching coastal resorts. Smaller ferry/boat services operate in summer along the Ionian coast and to nearby islands.

Where to Stay in Epirus (region) #

Epirus combines mountain villages, lakefront Ioannina and a narrow coastal strip, so accommodation runs from traditional stone guesthouses to seaside hotels. Options are plentiful in summer along the coast and in Zagori for trekking season; winter sees fewer choices inland.

Guesthouses & Guesthouses
$40-110 / night mid-range

Ioannina and Zagori villages like Monodendri and Papigo are best for traditional guesthouses and family-run pensions that emphasize local cuisine and stone-house charm. Book ahead for summer and autumn hiking periods.

Boutique Hotels
$70-180 / night mid-to-upper

Parga and parts of Ioannina offer boutique hotels in converted mansions and seaside locations, suitable for couples seeking character and central access to dining and beaches.

Mountain Huts & Refuges
$15-50 / night budget to basic

Tymfi massif and the Vikos Gorge area have mountain huts and basic refuges catering to hikers; stays are spartan and ideal for multiday treks from Papigo and Mikro Papigo villages.

Vacation Rentals
$50-160 / night mid-range

Parga and coastal Thesprotia have apartments and villas for families or groups wanting a seaside base. Rentals work well in shoulder season when hotel options tighten.

Small Seaside Hotels
$40-120 / night mid-range

Syvota and smaller coastal towns have modest hotels and pensions with direct beach access and straightforward services, practical for short beach stays and island-hopping trips.
