Epidaurus
Archaeological Site Ancient theatre renowned for exceptional acoustics and sanctuary
South of Athens, Epidaurus preserves the Sanctuary of Asclepius and a 4th‑century theatre famed for its acoustics. Visitors attend summer performances, inspect temple remains and learn about ancient healing practices.
Epidaurus is an archaeological site in the Peloponnese centred on the sanctuary of Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of medicine, and is celebrated for its healing complex and theatre. The sanctuary developed over several centuries and became a major pilgrimage centre in classical Greece.
The site’s chief highlight is the Theatre of Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BCE and renowned for its exceptional acoustics and symmetry, which can seat about 14,000 people. The sanctuary also includes temples, stoas, bathing facilities and the circular Tholos, all arranged within a planned sacred precinct.
Epidaurus flourished during the classical period as a combined religious and therapeutic centre where pilgrims sought cures through ritual and incubation. Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries revealed the layout and many architectural elements that can be seen today.
The archaeological site and museum lie in the Argolis region of the northeastern Peloponnese, roughly two hours’ drive southwest of Athens depending on route and traffic.
- Theatre capacity: The ancient theatre seats roughly 14,000 spectators and is still used during the annual Athens and Epidaurus Festival for classical drama performances.
- Best visiting seasons: Site visits are most comfortable in spring and autumn when the weather is mild and the surrounding pine-covered hills are at their most attractive.

How to Get to Epidaurus #
Ancient Epidaurus (the theatre and sanctuary) is reached by road from the Peloponnese; from Athens drive west on the A8/E94 toward Corinth and follow local signs to Epidavros/Lygourio - the drive typically takes around 2 hours depending on traffic. Seasonal KTEL Argolidas buses run from Athens (Kifissos bus station) and from nearby towns such as Nafplio; most buses stop at Lygourio, from where the archaeological site is a short taxi ride or a couple of kilometres by local road to the site entrance.
Tips for Visiting Epidaurus #
- Visit at the first light of day or late afternoon to avoid coach groups that arrive around mid‑day; the theater is far less crowded and the acoustics are easiest to test with a small group.
- Start at the ancient theater and then walk uphill to the Sanctuary of Asclepius and the onsite archaeological museum - many visitors only see the theater and miss well‑displayed finds in the museum.
- If you want photos or a quieter experience, climb to the top rows of the theater and explore the surrounding ruins and terraces, which most timed-tour visitors skip.
Best Time to Visit Epidaurus #
Late spring or early autumn is ideal for comfortable weather and smaller crowds; summer hosts festival performances but is hot and busy.
