Elbasan Fortress is a fortified complex at the heart of the city of Elbasan in central Albania, built when the town was refounded as an Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century. The fortress walls and internal plan shaped the later urban development of Elbasan.
The surviving masonry includes sections of curtain wall and towers that form an enclosed historic district, within which Ottoman-period streets and later buildings were established. The fortress functioned as a military and administrative centre in the Ottoman provincial system.
The fortress stands on the banks of the Shkumbin River and is integrated into Elbasan’s urban centre, making it easily visited from the modern city and visible from approaches across the river.

How to Get to Elbasan Fortress #
The Elbasan Fortress (Kalaja e Elbasanit) sits on a hill in central Elbasan and is reached on foot from the town centre. From the main Elbasan bus station or the city’s central square it is a short uphill walk (roughly 5-15 minutes depending on your starting point).
Intercity buses and minibuses run to Elbasan from other Albanian cities (including regular services from Tirana). Once in Elbasan follow local signs or ask at the bus station for directions toward the castle / old town; there is no special long-distance rail service directly to the fortress.

- Visit late afternoon for cooler temperatures and the best light for photos-the fortress' ramparts give panoramic views over Elbasan and the Shkumbin valley at sunset.
- Don't just walk the outer walls: spend time inside the citadel to explore narrow lanes and the surviving traditional houses and courtyards that many visitors overlook.
- Combine a fortress visit with a stroll through Elbasan's compact city centre so you can drop into nearby cafés or small museums without extra travel time.
