Elaiussa Sebaste

Elaiussa Sebaste is an ancient coastal city-ruin complex in Mersin Province on Turkey’s Mediterranean shore, notable for visible Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine remains. The site occupies a small peninsula and adjacent coastal slopes with extensive ruins exposed.

The ruin ensemble includes a theatre, an extensive necropolis of rock-cut tombs, public baths and the remains of harbor installations, with mosaic and sculptural fragments among the finds. Many structures date to Roman-period expansion when the city served as a regional port and administrative centre.

Founded in the Hellenistic era and enlarged under Roman rule, the settlement continued through Byzantine times before decline in the later medieval period. Archaeological work has revealed urban planning, public buildings and funerary architecture that document its long occupation and maritime role.

Located on the Mediterranean coast of Mersin Province, the ruins lie on a small coastal promontory near the modern coastal settlements of the Erdemli district. The site is reached from the regional coastal road and is commonly visited from nearby towns and from the provincial centres.

• Crowds and timing: Less visited than Turkey's largest Roman sites, making it easier to explore ruins without large crowds outside peak summer months.
