El Perú (Maya site)

El Perú, often referred to as El Perú‑Waka’, is a Classic Maya archaeological site in the Petén lowlands of northern Guatemala, with monumental architecture and carved hieroglyphic texts. The site includes plazas, palace groups, ballcourt and elite tombs characteristic of a regional political center.

Significant finds at the site include sculpted monuments, hieroglyphic inscriptions and royal burials that have informed understanding of Classic Maya rulership and ceremonial practice. The archaeological record shows occupation from the Preclassic into the Late Classic periods.

Fieldwork and excavations by Guatemalan and international teams have documented the site’s monuments and funerary contexts over the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Public access and research at the site are managed to protect fragile structures and painted or carved surfaces.

El Perú is located inland in the Petén Department of Guatemala, within the Maya lowland rainforest; it is visited primarily by archaeologists and guided archaeological tourism where permitted.
