El Nabatat Island, also known as Kitchener’s Island, is a planted botanical island in the Nile River opposite the city of Aswan, Egypt. It is famed for its dense collection of exotic and native trees and shrubs arranged as a formal botanical garden.
The island contains shaded paths, specimen trees from several continents and garden layouts established in the late 19th century; it provides cooling shade and botanical interest in contrast to the surrounding desert. Visitors reach the island by a short boat trip from Aswan and can walk the main paths within the garden.
The island’s gardens were developed in the late 19th century under the direction of Lord Kitchener and later maintained by Egyptian authorities as a municipal botanical garden. Over time plantings expanded to include many subtropical and ornamental species used for study and public enjoyment.
