El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico conserves a broad volcanic landscape of relatively recent lava flows, cinder cones, and lava tube caves. The monument protects rugged basalt terrain and associated sandstone features formed by volcanic activity.

The site offers hiking across lava fields, viewpoints over vast pahoehoe and aa flows, access to several cinder cones and marked entrances to lava tubes and skylights. The landscape is notable for its stark volcanic surfaces and contrast with surrounding desert and mesa country.

Volcanic eruptions that produced the lava flows occurred during the late Quaternary; the area has also been used historically by Indigenous peoples and later travelers, and has archaeological sites and traditional use areas adjacent to the volcanic features.

El Malpais is in west-central New Mexico, managed by the U.S. National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management, and lies near the town of Grants and the larger region west of Albuquerque.

  • Safety and access: Cave passages and lava tube access can be seasonal and require caution; check National Park Service guidance and obtain permits where needed before entering caves.
