El Ghriba Synagogue

El Ghriba Synagogue is an historic Jewish house of worship on the island of Djerba, Tunisia, regarded as one of North Africa’s oldest active synagogues and an important pilgrimage site. It stands in the island village commonly known as Erriadh or Hara Seghira.

The complex includes a courtyard, richly decorated interior rooms and a sanctified chamber that houses a revered stone associated by tradition with ancient Jewish heritage. The synagogue receives visitors year-round and a concentrated influx of worshippers and pilgrims during its annual spring pilgrimage.

Local tradition ascribes ancient origins to the shrine; the building has been rebuilt and expanded over centuries and has long served the Jewish community of Djerba. The site was also the target of a deadly terrorist attack in 2002, an event that affected access and security practices thereafter.

Located in the village of Erriadh on the island of Djerba, off Tunisia’s southeastern coast; the synagogue is reachable by the island’s road network from the ferry and airport connections to the Tunisian mainland.
