El Cocuy National Park is a high-Andean protected area in the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia, containing snow-capped peaks, glaciers and extensive páramo above the treeline. The park is known for rugged alpine scenery and a concentration of high summits used by mountaineers and trekkers.

Visitors can encounter glaciated peaks, glacial lakes and high-elevation grasslands, with marked trekking routes that lead to base camps and col crossings. The environment is fragile and weather and altitude pose significant challenges for unprepared visitors.

The park conserves peaks that exceed 5,000 metres and glacial features that have been the subject of scientific monitoring. Management requires permits and often the use of authorised local mountain guides for higher routes.

El Cocuy sits in the high Andes of eastern Colombia; access is via mountain towns on the park margins and the landscape transitions steeply from montane forest into high páramo and glaciated summits.

  • Access and safety: high-altitude trekking and climbing routes require acclimatisation, local guides and permits; glaciers in the park have been retreating in recent decades.

What to See #

  • Ritacuba Blanco: Ritacuba Blanco, the park's best-known summit, a glaciated peak rising above 5,300 metres that has been a focus for mountaineering and glaciological study.
  • Lakes and páramo: alpine lakes, permanent snowfields and high Andean páramo ecosystems that sit between the montane forest and the glaciated summits.

How to Get to El Cocuy National Park #

Parque Nacional Natural El Cocuy is accessed from the nearby towns of El Cocuy and Güicán in Boyacá. Long‑distance buses run from Bogotá to El Cocuy/Güicán (an overnight/long day trip); from those towns local roads and trailheads lead into the park-entry points require hiking (and in many cases a guide) rather than direct vehicle access into the high‑altitude glacial zones.

Tips for Visiting El Cocuy National Park #

  • Visit in Colombia's drier months (roughly December-February or mid-year) and allow a couple of days for acclimatization in nearby towns before attempting high-altitude routes.
  • Hire a local, certified mountain guide and secure any required park permits in advance-glacier and high-mountain treks in El Cocuy are regulated and best done with a guide.
  • Start hikes very early to avoid afternoon storms and to take advantage of clearer summit views; base yourself in Güicán or El Cocuy to shorten approach times.

Best Time to Visit El Cocuy National Park #

Aim for the park's dry windows (roughly Dec-Feb and Jun-Aug) when trekking conditions and visibility are generally best.

Dry windows (best for trekking)
Dec-Feb, Jun-Aug · -5-10°C (high elevations), 5-15°C (lower areas)
Clearer skies and firmer trails on the park's high mountain routes make these periods the main windows for organized treks and mountain access.
Wet season
Mar-May, Sep-Nov · -2-8°C (high elevations), 5-12°C (lower areas)
Frequent heavy rain, cloud and snow at altitude can close routes, reduce visibility and increase avalanche/rockfall risk.
Year-round caution
All year · Varies widely with altitude
Weather changes rapidly at high elevation; proper gear, acclimatization and up-to-date local guidance are essential.
