El Avila National park

El Avila National Park is the protected mountain range that forms the northern skyline above Caracas and separates the city from the Caribbean coast. The area is a popular recreational and ecological zone for residents and visitors to the capital.

The park contains steep wooded slopes, upland forest and a network of walking trails and roads that lead to lookout points and picnic areas; a cable car links central Caracas with higher elevations, providing quick access to panoramic viewpoints. Recreational use includes day hikes, short walks and scenic viewing across the city and sea.

The protected ridge has long served as a natural boundary for Caracas and as an urban greenbelt, hosting a range of native vegetation types along its elevational gradient. Management aims combine recreation with conservation of the mountain forests and watershed.

Geographically the park runs along the coastal Cordillera north of Caracas, forming a steep barrier between the metropolitan area and the coastal plain and sea. Main access points are from neighbourhoods and roads on the city side of the range.

• Proximity to Caracas: The protected coastal mountain ridge forms the immediate northern backdrop to the city of Caracas and contains many marked and unmarked hiking trails that rise from urban suburbs to high forested slopes.
• Climate and conditions: Weather changes rapidly with elevation - cooler, cloudier conditions and frequent mist are common above the city, so layered clothing is advisable for hikes and viewpoint visits.

What to See #

• Caracas cable car (Teleférico): The Teleferico de Caracas cable car system provides mechanised access from the city up into the mountain and terminates near high-elevation viewpoints used by walkers and tourists.
