Eihei-ji Temple

Eihei-ji is a major Sōtō Zen Buddhist temple complex in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, founded in 1244. It serves as one of the principal head temples of the Sōtō school and remains an active monastic training monastery.

Established by Dōgen in the mid-13th century as a centre for his method of Sōtō Zen practice, the temple has been rebuilt and maintained over centuries and retains its role in monastic training. Its buildings date from various periods but follow traditional layouts used in Zen monasteries.

Eihei-ji is located inland in Fukui Prefecture, in a wooded valley near the town of Eiheiji, roughly a one-hour drive from Fukui city; the approach involves rural roads and mountain-side terrain.
