Egyptian Museum (Museum of Egyptian Antiquities) stands in Tahrir Square in central Cairo and opened in its current building in 1902. It houses a very large collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts gathered over the 19th and 20th centuries.

Among the museum’s best-known displays are the gold funerary objects associated with the young pharaoh discovered in 1922 and the former public displays of royal mummies. Galleries cover periods from prehistory to the Greco-Roman era and include sculpture, jewellery and daily-use objects.

The institution was established to consolidate and conserve Egypt’s antiquities and has been a focal point for Egyptological study; more recent large-scale transfers of material to the Grand Egyptian Museum have begun but the Tahrir building still retains extensive holdings and specialised galleries.

The museum is located on Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, within walking distance of the Nile corniche and major central Cairo transport links.

  • Collection size: Holds one of the largest collections of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world, with more than 120,000 catalogued objects accumulated since the 19th century.

What to See #

  • Tutankhamun Galleries: The galleries that originally displayed the funerary treasures of a New Kingdom pharaoh, including iconic gold and inlaid objects found in an undisturbed tomb discovered in 1922.
  • Royal Mummy Room: A former display room for royal mummies and associated funerary equipment; many items were exhibited here before transfers to newer museum facilities.
  • Permanent galleries: Large permanent galleries covering prehistoric to Greco-Roman Egyptian antiquities, including sculpture, jewellery, pottery and textual materials spanning millennia.

How to Get to Egyptian Museum #

The Egyptian Museum is located on Tahrir Square in central Cairo. It is immediately adjacent to the Sadat station on Cairo Metro Line 1, so the museum is a very short walk from the metro exit. Central hotels and the downtown road network also place the museum within a short taxi ride across central Cairo.

From Cairo International Airport expect a drive of around 30-60 minutes into central Cairo depending on traffic (approximately 20-25 km). Taxis and ride‑hailing services drop visitors at the museum entrance on Tahrir.

Tips for Visiting Egyptian Museum #

  • Get to the museum at opening to see key displays such as the Tutankhamun galleries before crowds form; the museum is compact and early arrival gives the best viewing conditions.
  • Photography rules and fees can change-expect flash and tripod restrictions and check at the desk for any separate photography permit if you need to take many photos.
  • Be aware that several high-profile royal mummies and objects have been relocated to newer national museums in recent years, so ask at the information desk which highlights are on display that day and prioritize those.
