Memphis
Archaeological Site Ancient Egyptian capital and archaeological site
Ancient Memphis, near Giza, was Egypt’s early capital; today visitors come for the Mit Rahina open-air museum, ruins and a colossal statue of Ramesses II, studying Old Kingdom history close to Cairo.
Memphis was the ancient capital of Egypt founded in the Early Dynastic period and served as a major political and religious center for millennia, located in the northeastern Nile Delta near modern Mit Rahina.
The archaeological site presents foundations, statuary fragments and an open-air museum that help illustrate the scale of the ancient city rather than intact monumental temples. The site is smaller and quieter than larger complexes such as Luxor, so it is often visited as part of broader day trips from Cairo.
Tradition credits the foundation of Memphis to the unifier of Upper and Lower Egypt in the Early Dynastic period; it functioned as the royal and administrative capital through the Old Kingdom and remained an important religious center thereafter. Over time the city declined and many of its monuments were dismantled or repurposed, with major rediscovery and excavation beginning in the 19th century.
The remains lie at Mit Rahina on the west bank of the Nile, roughly 20 km south of central Cairo in Giza Governorate and close to the modern motorway connecting Cairo and Upper Egypt.
- Practicalities: The archaeological area is mostly open-air with scattered monuments and an on-site museum; bring sun protection and water when visiting.
