Eggishorn
Mountain Alpine peak offering panoramic views of Aletsch Glacier.
From the Eggishorn ridge in Valais, cable cars and trails deliver hikers to views over the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding Alpine peaks; visitors come for marked hikes, glacier panoramas and mountain huts.
Eggishorn is a mountain ridge in the Valais canton of southern Switzerland, rising to about 2,900 metres and overlooking the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps. It forms a prominent viewpoint within the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage area and is noted for wide glacier vistas.
A marked summit area and nearby viewpoints provide panoramic views across the Aletsch Glacier, surrounding peaks and the Rhône valley. Routes and trails from the village of Fiesch and the nearby aerial lift make the ridge one of the more accessible high-alpine viewpoints in the region.
The ridge and viewpoints have become established tourist and hiking destinations; in winter and early spring conditions can be snowy and require alpine equipment. Geographically it sits above the eastern end of the Valais alpine corridor and commands views of the central Bernese Alps.
- Viewing tip: A well-positioned viewpoint over the Aletsch Glacier and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage area; sunrise and clear-weather afternoons give the best visibility.
- Access: Mountain access is commonly combined with the Fiesch cable car and marked alpine trails; short exposed sections may require good footwear and caution in winter.
How to Get to Eggishorn #
Eggishorn (Valais) is reached via the village of Fiesch. Take the Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn rail service to Fiesch station, then board the Fiesch-Fiescheralp cable car; from Fiescheralp a well‑marked trail leads to the Eggishorn ridge and viewpoint (allow roughly 20-45 minutes’ walk from the top cable‑car station depending on pace). Fiesch is also reachable by road from the Rhone valley/Brig-Visp area; park in Fiesch and take the cable car up.
Tips for Visiting Eggishorn #
- Take the Fiesch-Eggishorn cable car (from Fiesch) to reach the summit quickly - the viewpoint gives reliable panoramas of the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding Alps on clear days.
- Plan your visit for early morning or late afternoon for the best visibility and softer light; midday often brings haze and more visitors from mountain huts and day trips.
- After the viewpoint, follow the short marked ridge walks for different glacier vistas - a brief walk from the station yields quieter outlooks that many day-trippers miss.
Best Time to Visit Eggishorn #
Visit Eggishorn in summer for the best hiking and glacier views; winter offers snowy scenery but conditions and access are more variable.
