Aletschhorn Mountain

Aletschhorn is a high mountain in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, notable for its large, glaciated flanks and for overlooking the Aletsch Glacier. It reaches an elevation of roughly 4,193 metres and is a major summit within the Aletsch region.

The peak was first climbed in the mid-19th century during the golden age of alpinism and subsequently became part of explorations of the Bernese Alps; it has remained a classic alpine ascent in Swiss mountaineering literature. Glacial retreat and climatic change have altered approach conditions in recent decades, affecting routes and hut approaches.

Located in the Valais canton of Switzerland within the Bernese Alps, the Aletschhorn sits above the eastern part of the Aletsch Glacier; the nearest larger settlements are valley towns in Valais and the area is accessed via mountain trails and alpine huts.

• Elevation: Rises to about 4,193 metres and is a prominent glaciated peak overlooking the Aletsch Glacier in the Bernese Alps.
• Alpine status: Part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and favoured by alpine mountaineers rather than casual hikers due to technical glacier routes.

Access to Aletschhorn is from the Aletsch region in Valais and requires alpine approach over glacier terrain. Typical starting points are the Rhone Valley rail hubs (Brig) or the railway and lift access at Fiesch; from there you use mountain cable cars/trails (for example Fiesch-Eggishorn area) and then join glacier routes toward the Aletsch Glacier and alpine huts. Climbs require glacier equipment and/or a certified mountain guide.

• Plan any climb or approach for the summer mountaineering season and only attempt routes with full glacier equipment and high-alpine experience; Aletschhorn is a technical alpine summit rather than a simple hike.
• Use established mountain-hut bases (for example the Konkordiahütte area in the Jungfrau-Aletsch region) and book hut berths well in advance; many summit attempts start from these refuges.
• If you're not a roped-glacier party, enjoy the Aletsch region from nearby viewpoints (Eggishorn/Bettmerhorn areas) - most casual visitors appreciate the Aletsch Glacier panorama without attempting the technical ascent.
