Edzna
Archaeological Site Maya archaeological city notable for its tall temple-pyramid.
Edzná’s Maya site in Campeche centers on a multi-level central pyramid and an elevated acropolis; visitors explore plazas, ballcourts and canal remains on quieter archaeological walks than at larger sites.
Edzna is a major Maya archaeological site in the state of Campeche on the Yucatán Peninsula, with occupation from the Preclassic into the Late Classic period. The site reached its principal development during the Classic era and is noted for its monumental civic architecture and hydraulic works.
The central complex includes multi-level plazas, palace buildings and the distinctive stepped tower known as the Temple of the Five Floors. A ballcourt and broad causeways connect the main groups and allow clear circulation across the main plaza.
Archaeological evidence shows construction phases from the Preclassic period into the Classic period, with substantial enlargement and reworking in the Late Classic (roughly the 6th to 9th centuries CE). Excavations and restorations were carried out in the 20th century to stabilise the major monuments.
The ruins lie inland in Campeche state, in wooded lowland terrain of the southern Yucatán Peninsula near the modern settlement that shares the site name. Coordinates place it in central Campeche within Mexico’s southeastern region.
- Best viewpoints: Access on-site is on foot across the central plaza and terraces; the acropolis gives the clearest panoramic view of the main groups.
- Visiting time: The site is less crowded than major Yucatán ruins, so plan at least 1.5-2 hours to see the main structures and walk the central complexes.
What to See #
- Great Acropolis: Central ceremonial core dominated by the Great Acropolis, a multi-level complex of plazas, palaces and temples built and rebuilt between the Preclassic and Late Classic periods.
- Temple of the Five Floors: The so-called Temple of the Five Floors, a stepped tower notable for its multiple storeys and visible from the plaza; the structure gives Edzna one of its best-known silhouettes.
- Ballcourt and Main Plaza: A ballcourt and main plaza used for public and ritual events; the ballcourt shows the typical long, narrow shape of Classic Maya courts.
- Hydraulic system: Hydraulic works including raised causeways, canals and a system of reservoirs that managed seasonal water and drainage around the site.
