Edirne Palace
Monument Former Ottoman palace complex in Edirne, partly ruined
In Edirne, the Ottoman palace complex preserves caravanserai ruins, gardens, and fragments of sultanic architecture from the city’s pre-Istanbul prominence. Visitors can walk ruined courtyards, see palace foundations, and link the site to nearby Selimiye Mosque narratives.
Edirne Palace was the principal Ottoman palace complex in the city of Edirne, which served as an Ottoman capital before the conquest of Constantinople. It functioned as a royal residence and administrative centre during the period when Edirne was a major imperial seat.
Remains once formed an extensive complex of audience halls, private apartments and service buildings laid out along courtyards and gardens. What survives today is a mix of archaeological ruins and a few restored sections rather than a complete standing palace; several excavated foundations and fragments indicate the original scale.
The palace was built and expanded while Edirne was a central Ottoman city from the 14th century onward, and it fell out of primary use after the capital moved to Istanbul. Over the centuries there were fires, dismantling and reuse of materials; later archaeological work has documented the footprint and some surviving structures.
The site lies in the modern city of Edirne in northwestern Turkey, near the Tunca and Meriç rivers and within the historic core of the city. It is accessible from Edirne’s central area and is close to other Ottoman-era monuments in the city.
