Ecbatana Archaeological Site

Ecbatana is an ancient city associated with the Median kingdom and later Persian administrations, historically located at the site of modern Hamadan in western Iran.

In the modern city of Hamadan visitors encounter museum displays, archaeological traces and historical references to the ancient citadel and administrative centre rather than extensive exposed ruins. The site is significant for its role in ancient Near Eastern political history and for material remains recovered in the region.

Ecbatana served as a capital for the Medes and was used by subsequent empires, including Achaemenid rulers, as a royal or administrative centre. Ancient sources and archaeological work document long occupation and changes in the city’s role across the first millennium BCE and later periods.

The ancient site lies at or beneath modern Hamadan in Hamadan province, in the western foothills of the Zagros Mountains.

Hamadan is served by frequent intercity buses and some long‑distance trains from Tehran (roughly 330-350 km to the east); the road journey from Tehran to Hamadan takes about 4-5 hours by car or bus. Within Hamadan, take a taxi or local bus from the city center or the railway/bus station - the archaeological mounds associated with Ecbatana are a short taxi ride or a walk of under 30 minutes from central Hamadan.

• Visit in the early morning to avoid midday heat and crowds in Hamadan; combine your trip to the Hegmataneh (Ecbatana) mound with a short excursion to the nearby Ganjnameh rock inscriptions on Mount Alvand for a fuller historical context.
• Enter the archaeological complex via the Hegmataneh site entrance adjacent to the on‑site museum - the small Hegmataneh Museum contains finds and interpretive displays many visitors miss if they only walk the mound.
• Ask for a local guide at the site or in Hamadan to explain the stratigraphy and later reuse of the hill: the visible mound conceals successive occupation layers and artifacts that are easy to overlook on a quick visit.
