Ecbatana

Ecbatana is an ancient city associated with the Median kingdom and later Persian administrations, historically located at the site of modern Hamadan in western Iran.

In the modern city of Hamadan visitors encounter museum displays, archaeological traces and historical references to the ancient citadel and administrative centre rather than extensive exposed ruins. The site is significant for its role in ancient Near Eastern political history and for material remains recovered in the region.

Ecbatana served as a capital for the Medes and was used by subsequent empires, including Achaemenid rulers, as a royal or administrative centre. Ancient sources and archaeological work document long occupation and changes in the city’s role across the first millennium BCE and later periods.

The ancient site lies at or beneath modern Hamadan in Hamadan province, in the western foothills of the Zagros Mountains.
