East Rand Area

The East Rand is the eastern portion of the Witwatersrand conurbation in Gauteng province, South Africa, comprising a cluster of towns and suburbs immediately east of Johannesburg. It is a significant urban and industrial belt within the Johannesburg metropolitan area.

The East Rand grew as part of the Witwatersrand’s expansion following the discovery of gold in the late 19th century and later industrial development; municipal boundaries and local government structures have evolved into the modern Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality.

The East Rand lies immediately east of central Johannesburg in Gauteng province and includes towns and suburbs that form a continuous urban zone extending toward the province’s eastern suburbs.

What to See#

• Germiston: A major suburban and industrial town east of central Johannesburg with residential areas, commercial centres and light industry, historically linked to gold‑rush and later industrial development.
• Benoni: A residential and commercial town east of Johannesburg known for its suburban communities and local services.
• Boksburg: An urban centre with industrial and mining history, part of the greater East Rand conurbation that forms the eastern segment of Gauteng’s urban area.

The East Rand is served by the R24 and N12 arterial roads, and by the Metrorail commuter lines from Johannesburg. Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport lies within Ekurhuleni; from the airport the R21 and N12 provide direct road access to towns across the East Rand.

• If visiting for business or urban exploration, base in Germiston or Boksburg for easier access to passenger rail and major roads.
• Traffic is heavy on the R24 and N12 corridors during peak hours - plan journeys outside 7-9am and 4-6pm.
• Most of the region's industrial heritage is visible from the road; guided heritage tours are scarce, so contact local municipalities (Ekurhuleni) in advance for site access.
