East London Mosque

The East London Mosque is a major mosque and community centre on Whitechapel Road in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, east London. It is one of the largest mosque complexes in the United Kingdom and serves a large local Muslim population.

The mosque developed as a formal community institution in the 20th century and a purpose-built mosque complex was established in the late 20th century, with further expansions in the early 21st century to add community facilities. It has since functioned as both a place of worship and a local centre for social services and interfaith activity.

The mosque sits on Whitechapel Road in east London, near the boundary between Whitechapel and Aldgate, a short walk from the north bank of the Thames and close to the A11 and central London transport links.

• Peak times: Friday midday prayers are the busiest time, with larger crowds and extended queues for entry; arrive early if you plan to attend Jummah.
