Whitechapel Gallery is a public art gallery in the Whitechapel area of East London, established in 1901 to provide access to contemporary art for local communities. It is known for early exhibitions by major modern and contemporary artists.

The gallery presents rotating exhibitions of contemporary artists, commissions, and an active programme of talks, film and education projects. Exhibition spaces are arranged across several gallery rooms with changing displays rather than a single permanent collection.

Created by local philanthropists and civic leaders at the turn of the 20th century, the gallery grew into a key venue for modern art in London, hosting significant first shows by international artists and continually commissioning new work.

Whitechapel Gallery is located on Whitechapel High Street in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, within easy reach of Aldgate and the City of London.

  • Founding and mission: Founded in 1901 to bring art to East London, the gallery has a long history of commissioning and debuting contemporary exhibitions and public programmes.
