East Lake (Donghu) is a large urban lake in Wuhan, Hubei province, forming a major component of the city’s lakeside park and recreation area. It is one of the best-known urban lakes in China and is closely associated with Wuhan’s greenbelt.
The area around East Lake has long been part of Wuhan’s natural floodplain and was gradually developed in the 20th century into parks and scientific and cultural facilities. Over time the lakeside has been managed for recreation, conservation and urban amenity.
The lake lies within Wuhan city limits in Hubei province, on the eastern side of the city, and is surrounded by urban districts and parkland rather than remote countryside.

From Wuchang Railway Station or Hankou, take a taxi or Metro Line 2/4 connections toward the Moshan/Tingtao areas; buses and local taxis provide direct service to major park entrances such as Moshan and Tingtao. Bike rentals and ride-hailing are widely available for final-mile access.

- Time a visit for late March-early April to see the cherry blossoms near Wuhan University and the Moshan Scenic Area.
- Most of the public lakeshore promenades are free - pay only for specific attractions (boat rides, island gardens); enter through the Moshan or Tingtao entrances to avoid the busiest spits.
- Rent a bike to explore the Longwangtan and Tingtao stretches early in the morning when fishermen and tai chi groups still dominate the path.
