Dzūkija National Park
National Park Lithuanian national park protecting forests, wetlands, and dunes
Lithuania’s largest national park, Dzūkija offers pine forests, rivers and traditional villages; visitors come for hiking, canoeing, folk architecture and seasonal mushroom and berry foraging.
Dzūkija National Park is a protected area in southern Lithuania’s Alytus County established to conserve natural pine forests, wetlands and traditional rural landscapes. The park preserves characteristic lowland pine woodlands, dunes, rivers and small villages of the Dzūkija ethnographic region.
Large tracts of pine forest, patches of open dunes, small rivers and marshes are the main attractions, together with traditional villages where vernacular wooden architecture and local folk culture remain visible. Trails and quiet backroads offer hiking and cycling; seasonal mushroom and berry picking are part of the local visitor experience.
The park was created at the end of the 20th century to protect both the natural habitats and the cultural landscapes of the Dzūkija region, and management focuses on maintaining traditional land use patterns alongside habitat conservation.
Geographically the park sits in the southeastern part of Lithuania, within Alytus County, forming a mosaic of forests and wetlands in a largely rural landscape. Small settlements such as Marcinkonys lie at the park edge and act as common starting points for visitors.
- When to go: Best visited from late spring through early autumn for walking, and in autumn for mushroom and berry foraging traditions.
- Getting around: Several marked hiking and cycling trails run between small villages, pine forests and river valleys, offering low-density walking routes away from roads.
What to See #
- Čepkeliai Mire: A large peatland and mire in the southern part of the park that is one of the country's most important wetland complexes and supports specialised bog vegetation and birdlife.
- Marcinkonys village: A traditional village that acts as a frequent visitor gateway to the park, with local trails and access points into surrounding forests and dunes.
