Dynjandi
Waterfall Tiered waterfall and Westfjords landmark
A cascading, multi-tiered waterfall (Fjallfoss) in the Westfjords reached by a short coastal drive and footpath. Visitors photograph the broad stepped fall, walk the trail connecting smaller cascades, and combine it with Westfjords drives.
Dynjandi is a tiered waterfall complex in the Westfjords of Iceland, notable for its broad, fan-shaped main fall and a series of smaller cascades below. It is widely regarded as the largest waterfall in the Westfjords region.
The main drop forms a wide, plunging curtain of water that fans out as it descends; a sequence of smaller falls continues downstream, creating a stepped cascade system. There is a maintained footpath from the road to viewpoints that reveal the full series of falls.
Formed by fluvial erosion and local geology, Dynjandi has long been a natural landmark rather than a constructed site and has remained a focus of local tourism and nature appreciation.
The waterfall lies on a tributary feeding into the Arnarfjörður fjord in the southern part of the Westfjords; it is reached from the regional road network and is near small coastal communities in the area.
- Hike to viewpoint: A short uphill trail of under 1.5 kilometres leads from the roadside car park to the waterfall base and offers progressively better panoramic views of the cascading steps.
- Seasonal flow and conditions: Flow varies seasonally and the river can be fast; river crossings on approach tracks may be wet or icy depending on conditions, so waterproof footwear is recommended.
