Dumat al-Jandal is an ancient oasis town in Al-Jouf Province in northern Saudi Arabia, notable for its substantial fortifications and long archaeological sequence. The site has been occupied since antiquity and stands at an important crossroads in the region.
The standout monument is the stone fortress commonly called the Marid Fortress, rising above the old town walls. Visitors can also see stretches of ancient town walls, archaeological remains and traditional buildings within the oasis settlement.
Dumat al-Jandal has a long history of settlement extending back to the Iron Age and appears in early Near Eastern records; it remained occupied through classical and Islamic periods. The fortress and town fabric reflect building phases from pre-Islamic and medieval times.
The site lies in the Al-Jouf region of northwestern Saudi Arabia on an inland oasis that historically controlled routes across the northern Arabian Peninsula.
