Powerful waterfall on the Mandovi River at the Goa-Karnataka border, dropping through jungle near Mollem; travellers arrive for monsoon-fed cascades, jungle treks, jeep safaris and views from the railway bridge.
Dudhsagar Falls is a high, multi-tiered waterfall on the Mandovi River on the Goa-Karnataka border, set within protected forest. The falls are renowned for their heavy flow during the monsoon and the milky-white appearance of the descending water.
The cascade drops in several stages and forms a large plunge pool at the base; it is one of the more prominent waterfalls on India’s western Ghats. Popular visitor routes include approaches through Mollem/Cola and views from the nearby railway line when trains pass close to the falls.
The falls lie within the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, and visits are subject to park regulations and seasonal access constraints. The site is commonly visited for day trips and short hikes from nearby access points.
Geographically Dudhsagar is in the south-eastern part of Goa near the border with Karnataka, within a forested, hilly part of the Western Ghats.
- Best time to visit: Flow is at its fullest during the monsoon season, generally from June through September, when the falls are most dramatic.
- Access and safety: Common approaches are via the Kulem/Cola area and by local park or railway access points; access can be restricted during heavy rains for safety.
How to Get to Dudhsagar Falls #
Dudhsagar Falls is accessed from the Goa side at Kulem/Collem. The usual approaches are the Kulem/Collem railway station or the village of Kulem: local jeeps operate from Kulem into the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary to a point where you can walk to the falls, and many visitors also trek along the railway track for a few kilometres to reach the pool. By road, Kulem is the gateway village; from towns in Goa (for example Panaji or Margao) the drive is typically a 1.5-2 hour trip depending on traffic and exact start point.
Tips for Visiting Dudhsagar Falls #
- Aim for the post-monsoon months (roughly October-December) for high water flow while avoiding the dangerous track conditions of peak monsoon.
- Use the Kulem/Collem entry point and book a licensed jeep safari or guide in advance-local operators and park/forest authorities control access along the forest tracks leading to the falls.
- Start early in the day to beat the busiest safari groups and to avoid summer heat and crowds at the main viewing points.
Best Time to Visit Dudhsagar Falls #
Visit after the monsoon (Oct-Feb) for strong falls and safer access; monsoon gives biggest flow but can be hazardous.
