Ducal Palace, Urbino

Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale), Urbino is a large Renaissance palace complex in the hilltop city of Urbino in the Marche region, constructed for the Dukes of Montefeltro in the 15th century. It is one of Italy’s important Renaissance monuments and anchors the historic centre of Urbino.

The palace contains a main ceremonial courtyard, private ducal apartments and specialised rooms such as the small inlaid study known as the Studiolo of Federico, as well as large rooms now housing the city’s picture gallery and collections. The building is noted for its architectural innovations, decorative programs and its association with the court of Duke Federico da Montefeltro.

Construction and major works date to the 15th century under the Montefeltro dukes, with contributions from architects and artists active in the Renaissance. Over subsequent centuries the complex has been preserved and adapted to house public collections and exhibition spaces.

The Ducal Palace occupies a central position in Urbino’s compact hilltop town, overlooking the surrounding Marche countryside and forming the focal point of the city’s historic centre.
