The Historic Centre of Urbino is a hilltop Renaissance town in the Marche region of Italy, noted for its coherent urban fabric and association with the ruling Montefeltro dynasty. The centre preserves a compact ensemble of palaces, churches and streets that embody Renaissance urban and architectural ideals.

The Palazzo Ducale is the focal monument, built and expanded in the 15th century under the dukes of Urbino and containing important civic and artistic collections. Streets and religious buildings around the palace reflect the city’s development as a cultural and political centre during the Renaissance.

Urbino flourished under Federico da Montefeltro in the 15th century when major palaces and institutions were constructed and patronage of the arts established the city’s cultural reputation. The historic fabric retains the layout and buildings from this formative period.

The town sits on a ridge in the Apennine foothills of central Italy, forming a compact hilltop centre that dominates the surrounding rural landscape.

• Cathedral and historic streets: The Cathedral and adjacent historic streets which form part of the compact Renaissance town centre and its religious and civic fabric.

Urbino is about 40 km inland from Pesaro. From Ancona or Pesaro, regional buses (Fermata Urbino) connect regularly; the nearest major rail station is Pesaro (40-50 minutes by bus). The historic centre is compact and best explored on foot.

• Start at the Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale) courtyard to orient yourself: the layout explains the city's Renaissance planning.
• Walk the stretch of Via Raffaello where Raphael was born-Urbino's namesake is visible in small plaques and local guides.
• Avoid Sundays if aiming to visit museum interiors; they tend to be busiest then.
