The Ducal Palace in Mantua is an extensive palace complex that served as the residential and governmental centre of the Gonzaga family for several centuries. It combines multiple buildings, courtyards and richly decorated rooms built and adapted from the 14th century onward.

Among the palace’s principal attractions is the Camera degli Sposi, a painted private chamber by Andrea Mantegna renowned for its illusionistic frescoes. The complex contains ceremonial halls, private apartments, courtyards and chapels that together illustrate Gonzaga patronage of the arts and Renaissance court life.

Large parts of the palace are presented as a museum, allowing visitors to move through successive rooms and courtyards that reflect different building phases and decorative programs.

The palace complex evolved over roughly four centuries as the Gonzaga family expanded their residence and administrative buildings, commissioning major artistic and architectural works. Its fabric records transitions from medieval court architecture to Renaissance palatial design.

The Ducal Palace occupies a substantial area in the historic centre of Mantua, adjacent to other civic and religious buildings, and is accessed from the city’s main squares and streets.

• Camera degli Sposi: The Camera degli Sposi is a richly frescoed private audience chamber painted by Andrea Mantegna in the 15th century and is one of the palace’s most famous interiors.
• Corte Vecchia and Gonzaga apartments: The complex includes a series of courtyards, residential apartments and ceremonial rooms that were developed over several centuries under the Gonzaga family.

The Ducal Palace (Palazzo Ducale) sits in Mantua’s historic centre beside Piazza Sordello. Arrive by train at Mantova (Mantua) station and walk into the old town (about 10-20 minutes depending on route) or take a short local bus/taxi. By car use the A22 motorway and follow signs for Mantova centre; parking is outside the pedestrian historic core.

• Reserve a timed ticket for the Camera degli Sposi (Mantegna frescoes) if possible and visit it early in your visit-this space has limited capacity and is the most time-sensitive highlight of the Ducal Palace.
• Enter from Piazza Sordello/Piazza Castello to follow the usual visitor route through the courtyards; allow at least two hours to explore the interconnected rooms and courtyards rather than treating the palace as a single gallery.
• Visit on a weekday outside school holidays when possible; the palace complex is extensive and quieter weekdays give you better access to smaller rooms and detailed frescoes many visitors miss.
