Dublinia
Museum Interactive Viking and medieval Dublin history museum
Dublinia sits beside Christ Church Cathedral and offers hands-on exhibits on Viking and medieval Dublin; visitors explore reconstructions, period artefacts and the city’s medieval street layout.
Dublinia is an interactive heritage centre in central Dublin that interprets the Viking and medieval periods of the city’s history. It opened in 1993 and is located in the Synod Hall adjacent to Christ Church Cathedral.
Exhibits include reconstructions and hands-on displays that recreate Viking-Age seafaring and medieval urban life, with full-scale built scenes such as a replica longship and market streets. The centre aims to give a practical sense of daily life, craft and trade in Dublin across those periods.
Dublinia was established as a public history attraction in the early 1990s to present the archaeology and documentary record of Dublin’s Viking and medieval past. The Synod Hall building that houses the displays sits within the cathedral precinct and was repurposed for the museum use.
The site is in the medieval heart of Dublin, close to Christchurch Cathedral and Dublin Castle, within walking distance of the River Liffey and the city centre.
- Location tip: Housed in the Synod Hall next to Christ Church Cathedral, allowing combined visits to the heritage centre and the cathedral precinct.
- Visiting note: Peak visitor numbers occur in summer; booking ahead is recommended for groups and school parties.
