Christ Church Cathedral (Cathedral of the Holy Trinity) in Dublin is a medieval cathedral and the seat of the Church of Ireland’s Archbishop of Dublin. The foundation of a church on the site dates to the early medieval period and the present cathedral retains substantial medieval fabric alongside later restoration work.

The building’s extensive crypt is a major feature, containing archaeological finds, medieval tombs and museum displays; the nave and choir display Norman and later period architecture. The cathedral has undergone major Victorian-era restoration while conserving its medieval character.

Christ Church stands in Dublin’s historic quarter near Dublin Castle and forms part of the city’s principal medieval ecclesiastical complex; it remains an active place of worship and a frequent visitor attraction.

What to See#

• Crypt: The cathedral crypt, one of the largest medieval crypts in Ireland and Britain, housing archaeological displays, tombs and medieval stonework.
• Nave and choir: The cathedral nave and choir area featuring medieval stonework and later restorations, forming the main liturgical and tourist spaces within the building.

From Dublin city centre (O’Connell Street), it is a 10-15 minute walk south along Dame Street to Christchurch Place. Nearest Luas tram stop is Trinity (Red Line) about a 10-minute walk; several Dublin Bus routes stop along Dame Street and College Green.

• Arrive before 10:00 to hear the morning choir; the light in the east window is best then.
• Visit the medieval crypt - it is one of the largest in Britain and Ireland and holds the cathedral's weird little curiosities (ask the guide about the mummified cat).
• Buy a combined ticket for crypt + tower if available to save time; the tower climb is steep and not suitable for mobility issues.
