Castle Historic castle complex in Dublin with government offices
At Dublin Castle in the city’s medieval quarter, guided tours explore state apartments, a restored Georgian complex and castle grounds long associated with Ireland’s administrative history; the site also hosts official ceremonies and exhibitions.
Dublin Castle is a historic castle and government complex in central Dublin, Ireland. The site began as an Anglo-Norman stronghold and retains a 13th-century defensive tower.
The visitor highlights include the ornate State Apartments, the medieval undercroft and the 13th-century Record Tower. The castle complex also contains the Chester Beatty Library, formal gardens and museum spaces that draw both tourists and official delegations.
Constructed by the Anglo-Norman administration after the 12th-century invasion of Ireland, the castle served as the seat of British rule in Ireland for several centuries. After 1922 much of the complex passed to the new Irish state and it is now used for state receptions, government offices and public display.
The castle sits in Dublin city centre on Dame Street, a short walk from Christchurch Cathedral and other central attractions; it occupies the site of the old Viking-era pool giving Dublin its Irish name.
- State Apartments access: Tours of the State Apartments provide access to ceremonial rooms not open to the general public without a guide.
- Record Tower age: The Record Tower dates to the early 13th century and is the oldest surviving part of the original Norman fortification.

- Chapel Royal: A late-medieval and later chapel within the castle complex notable for its restored interior and occasional services.
- Chester Beatty Library: A public museum and library on the castle grounds housing illuminated manuscripts, rare books and non-European collections; it opened on the castle site in 2000.
- Dubh Linn Garden: A small planted area near the castle's east side laid out for public access and linked to the river line that gave the settlement its name.
