Dubai Museum is housed in Al Fahidi Fort in the Al Fahidi Historic District of Bur Dubai and presents the history and traditional life of Dubai and the surrounding region. The museum opened in 1971 and uses the fort’s rooms to display archaeological finds, dioramas and reconstructions of pre-oil Emirati life.

Displays include scale models of old Dubai, recreated souk and house interiors, pearl-diving and fishing scenes, and artefacts recovered from regional archaeological sites. The museum aims to contextualise the city’s rapid transformation by showing daily life, trade and material culture prior to the discovery of oil.

Al Fahidi Fort dates from the late 18th century and was adapted to museum use when the modern cultural programme for Dubai was established in the early 1970s. The building itself is an object of interest as one of the emirate’s oldest standing structures.

The museum stands on the Bur Dubai side of Dubai Creek in the historic quarter, within easy walking distance of abra crossings and the Al Fahidi neighbourhood.

Located in the Al Fahidi historic district (Bur Dubai), the museum is a short walk from the Al Fahidi Metro Station (Green Line) or from the abra ferry that crosses Dubai Creek to the Dubai Old Souk. Taxis and local buses also serve the area; parking is limited in the old quarter.

• Visit early morning or after the Friday prayer window (friday midday), when school groups are smaller and the displays feel less crowded.
• Bring cash for the tiny courtyard vendors selling local sweets and miniature dhow models.
• Don't skip the audio exhibit and the reconstructed souk alley in the fort's inner rooms - it's where the museum's drama is concentrated.
